The Birth Of San Francisco - A Parade

HALLOWEEN, that extravagant circus of sensation, the season of sly transformation and monumental merriment in the face of death, is a distinctly American confection. San Francisco, our self-made kaleidoscope of multifarious humanity, is also based on self-reinvention, instant growth, tolerance, and above all, gaiety. Halloween has a long and rich history in San Francisco which must be preserved and continued.

The ANCIENT and MYSTIC ORDER of MASKHARAT
invites you, fellow citizen, to march with us in
the CAVALCADE of COSTUMES,
a parade through the
CASTRO STREET HALLOWEEN PARTY,
October 31st, 2003
.

The start point of the parade is:
Market and Laguna streets
Assemble between 6 and 6:30 O’ the clock
Parade commences at 6:30 O’ the clock

The CAVALCADE OF COSTUMES comprises the final portion of the MARCH OF LIGHT parade. When you arrive at the start point, please move to the rear of the March of Light staging area for our group. If you have any trouble finding MASKHARAT, please locate and ask a March of Light organizer, who will direct you to our location.

For more information on the March of Light, please see http://www.marchoflight.org/

Plan to come prepared to walk for at least an hour, and bring whatever supplies you require. If you’re interested in carrying a flag or otherwise helping out during the parade, contact us for more information.

Our aim this year is to reacquaint ourselves with the illustrious and illicit early days of our fair city, to transport ourselves back in time to THE BIRTH OF SAN FRANCISCO! Deck yourself out in your old Frisco finery! Costumes fitting loosely into the theme/time-frame (1849-1899) are mandatory for all comers.

Please see the Who's Who page, and the San Francisco History page for a list of ideas and characters appropriate for this theme. The Costumes page offers many resources for what to wear, where to find it, or how to make it.
